School, Church, Scout, and Other Group Outings

Bring your class, group, family, church youth group, etc., and join us in a day of challenges, growth, and fun that may inspire your group or organization to achieve individual and team excellence. The Eagle Quest Program at the Howell Conference and Nature Center is designed to present groups with a sequence |of increasingly challenging activities that require the participants to utilize and improve important skills for a successful team. Our program also specializes in guiding individuals to recognize achievable goals that provide personal challenge.
Each program is unique. Our trained facilitators design programs to specifically meet the needs and goals of every group.

Adventure Education

The adventure-based learning process used in our challenge program allows groups and individuals to grow and learn by doing. We believe this process, when experienced in the outdoors, will create an ideal learning environment.

Challenge by Choice
The Howell Nature Center integrates the Challenge by Choice philosophy into the Eagle Quest Program activities throughout the day. Participants are able to choose to try a potentially challenging activity with the support and encouragement of the group. Respect for each individuals' choices and ideas is an essential component in each challenge. This philosophy creates exciting learning opportunities and insights into the issues of risk taking, mutual support, self-confidence, leadership, and team work.

Challenge Courses

Following on-the-ground instruction, participants will climb into tall pines trees to conquer obstacles made of rope and wood 25-35 feet above the ground. Our North Pines course incorporates nine different elements including an Inclined Beam Walk, the Wildcat Log,
Cargo Net, Postman's Walk, Tarzan Traverse, Burma buckets, Wobble Bridge, Burma Bridge
and the exciting Zip Line.

Our South Pines course offers the challenge of seven different obstacles placed 25 feet off the ground. Try the Hour-Glass, the Wobbly Bridge, the Balance Beam, Flea Jump, Tension Traverse, Postman's Walk, and the Charlie Chaplin walk before riding the Zip Line out of the course.

Participants set their own personal challenge as they move from obstacle to obstacle.
Each task brings new challenges, thrills and fun. While this is an intense experience,
participants are closely supervised by trained facilitators and must wear appropriate safety equipment provided by the Center.

Our North Pines Course offers new challenges for beginners and experienced alike!
Climb the Inclined Beam, walk the Wildcat Log, traverse the Cargo Net, walk the One Line
Bridge, the Multi-Vine and the Burma Bridge.  An exciting ride down the Zip Line at the
end will give you a great finish.  While this is an intense experience, participants are
closely supervised by trained facilitators and must wear appropriate safety
equipment provided by the Center.

The Climbing Tower
Experience the thrill of a climb on the tallest outdoor Climbing Tower in Michigan! Our
60-foot Tower has climbs for beginners and experienced climbers. After a climb to the top, you can enjoy the view from the top before you descend to the ground.

The Climbing Wall
Do you want the challenge of climbing a 28-foot vertical cliff but do not want to travel
1,000 miles to do it? Come to the Howell Conference and Nature Center!

We have created our own cliff to test the skills you will learn from our knowledgeable instructors. The best thing about our cliff is that it is double-sided; one side provides excitement for beginning climbers while the other challenges even experienced climbers.

Participants are taught the fundamentals of rock climbing and then test their abilities on the Wall. Everyone climbs as far as they are able. Reaching the top may be the goal, but the joy of climbing involves much more. See for yourself!

Of course, safety is always our major concern. All participants use our gear and are closely supervised. This wall is a great introduction to rock climbing. It gives beginning climbers a shorter and easier route to develop their climbing techniques.

Zip Line
Our free-standing 500-foot Zip Line is an exciting ride. After participants put on their
seat harness and helmet, they listen to a safety orientation to the Zip Line. The ride begins
at the top of a hill and crosses over a valley.

Initiatives
Who says you have to climb trees or walls to challenge yourself? Not us! We have a course for Land Lubbers, too, but it isn't a piece of cake. Here's the scenario: Your plane has just crashed
on a deserted jungle island in the South Pacific. Your group must make it to the highest point on the island to signal for help. Along the way, are obstacles ranging from one to three feet off the ground.  Your group will encounter such things as the Alligator Swamp, Cobra Island, the Giant Spider Web as well as other "dangerous" situations demanding group cooperation,
problem-solving, and moderate physical effort to "survive."  This program may have imaginary circumstances, but the rewards are real. Participants earn self-confidence and develop
important skills to become an effective team member.

Your school, church, family group or organization can enjoy one or all three of these
programs in a day's outing. Call us and we will help you plan the perfect event for
your group's ages and interests.
